RENOOOOOOOOOO. Man, I'm so going to have to come to the office and see what's up. Are you okay? Did you have a job to do?

[No answer. They didn't even figure out where to meet or what time, but so help him if Zack stands him up there will be hell to pay.

An hour later another message.]

Cissnei says I'm an idiot.

[Uh, yeah, still ignoring you, Zack. But if he wasn't, he'd probably say how Cissnei should also explain how you're gonna have to give up the texting and go find Reno at the weapons test site, where he is for sure in the process of blowing up objects with your face scrawled on them. 'Ciss is smart like that, so she'd know.]

[Yeah, she would. But poor Zack, he doesn't ask, and he doesn't at all get what is going on. Which means he tries ANOTHER person, just to figure it out. And Tseng confirms that Reno isn't out on a mission. And Dammit what does he do with that?

THis is so stupid. It takes ANOTHER message, finally to Cissnei, to figure it out.

Which means it takes HOURS for him to show up.]

Reno? You in here? If not I'm going to be REALLY annoyed. I feel like everyone's been running me around for the whole night!

[Zack's answer is an explosion, though sadly it's on a smaller scale than Reno would have preferred and not at all the kind of massive shockwave he'd like to have caused without warning, so that maybe Zack would fall on his stupid SOLDIER ass.

[He shouldn't be this pissy. He's acted just as dense hundreds of times, but somehow it's more frustrating knowing Zack probably isn't faking it like he always does. Unfortunately for Reno, the detonator he'd been testing takes that moment to up and die on him. Because of course.

With a sigh, he throws the useless piece of crap aside, turning to Zack with a pointedly unimpressed look.]

...the hell you been, anyway? Don't they assign you meatheads like, watches or anything? It's been like-- [He makes a show of looking at his wrist, which clearly has no watch to consult.] --three hours? Gettin' slow in your old age, Zacky-boy.

Yeah, First Classes don't tend to get 'watches'. And you weren't responding. I figured you had work or something. Or you went home. Or you went to a bar.

[So many places Reno could have gone.]

And I'm on call, so I have to stay in the building, in case there is a reason to need a First. I get that job more because Sephiroth just, I don't know, he's Sephiroth. And there are so few of us these days.

[And he's a good example to the lower ranks apparently or something.]

[Reno stares at Zack for a moment, expression completely blank.

...is he this annoying? Is this what it's like when people talk to him and he's playing dumb? Because holy wow is Zack annoying right now.]

Hey, so like, remember earlier when we were talkin' about whether you should talk at the party or not?

[Reno strides toward Zack as he speaks, stony-faced but showing signs of obvious irritation.]

[Zack tilts his head as he thinks back in the conversation. Yeah, there's a REASON he was compared to a puppy.]

Uh, yeah? What about it? Wait, are you saying I shouldn't talk at the party? Oh man, I don't wanna make you look bad. Or Soldier. But what if not saying anything makes me look sorta dense?

Yeah. See, that? Exactly what you're doin' right now?

[Coming to a halt in front of Zack, Reno reaches out abruptly and grabs a handful of Zack's stupid regulation turtleneck, dragging him down until their faces are level, mere inches apart.]

Don't.

[And then he's closing the distance, kissing Zack full on the mouth. Angry kiss? Definitely. But Zack pretty much deserves it for being such a moronic pain in Reno's ass.]

[Woah, wasn't expecting grabbed. And, more than that, he's not expecting the sharp word. Because what does he mean by that? He'll need clarification. Later.

More than that, he is just sort of shocked by that. Could he shove Reno away? Totally. Is he doing so? No way. Instead he wraps an arm around Reno's back just to pull him closer. What? It's rude not to stabilize someone when they're off balance. And Reno must be off balance. Because Zack totally is.]

[So he maybe hadn't been expecting the arm around his waist. Honestly, he hadn't expected Zack to respond at all. The arm around his waist kinda derails Reno's clever plan, since all of a sudden he's super aware of just how tall Zack is. Reno isn't used to kissing people who have height on him, and somehow those few inches cause something in his brain to short-circuit... just for a second. Or two. Or five.

But no, fuck, he can't get distracted because he's making a point, dammit. Now is not the time to go all weak in the knees like some schoolgirl.

A second later, Reno pulls back. He would have stepped away, only he's kinda caught in the crook of an arm that -- wow, okay, are those biceps for real?

Focus.

Despite the dizzy feeling in his head, Reno still manages to don an somewhat acceptable smirk, angling a piercing blue gaze up at Zack.]

Now we're friends, yeah? So there's a fuckin' friend kiss for you, SOLDIER boy. Like friends do.

[Yeah, he's looking a little bit smug.]

[See, there he was, having a nice moment, and now Reno's just saying 'friend' a lot to the point where the word is losing meaning and Zack is so confused. Maybe he's from a backwater place but he's pretty sure friends don't kiss because he totally would have caught Angeal and Genesis at least once and...

Oh. Oh. Oh geez. Yeah, fucked up. Cissnei is right. He is an idiot. And oh body he looks like a kicked puppy.]

Shit. I didn't understand you earlier, did it? Well damn.

[He does pull away then, if just to let out a groan of frustration. It's a physical thing, hands raking through his hair briefly before he spins on his heal to glare at Zack.]

Are you fucking kidding me? [Ooh, watch out, Reno. You're so frustrated you're actually enunciating. What will people think?]

What part of 'Hey Zack do you wanna go to a party with me like as a date' did you not understand? You literally told me to ask you out if I wanted to, so I fuckin' did. You cannot tell me you're honestly that fuckin' dense.
